Moving averages are the most-used and most-misused indicator in forex. Learn the right way to deploy them and they double as trend filter, dynamic support, and entry trigger in one line.
SMA vs EMA — what's the difference?
The Simple Moving Average (SMA) gives every closing price in its window equal weight. The Exponential Moving Average (EMA) weights recent prices more heavily. Result: the EMA reacts faster to new moves, the SMA stays smoother through noise.
The four canonical lengths
- 20-period EMA — short-term trend, often used as a pullback line.
- 50-period SMA — medium-term trend; the line institutions actually watch.
- 100-period SMA — slow trend filter on the 4H chart.
- 200-period SMA — the textbook bull/bear divider on the daily.
How to use them
Trend filter. Only take long setups when price is above the 200 SMA, only shorts when below. Cuts whipsaws aggressively.
Dynamic support / resistance. In a strong trend, pullbacks to the 20 EMA often hold. Combine with a price-action trigger.
Crossovers. The "golden cross" (50 SMA crossing above the 200 SMA) and "death cross" (the reverse) are momentum signals, not entry triggers. Use them to confirm regime, not to time individual trades.
The slope rule
A flat moving average means no trend. The angle of the line matters more than its absolute value. If the 50 SMA is angled up sharply on the H4, ignore counter-trend setups.
What moving averages do not do
They do not predict. They describe. Any system that relies only on a moving average to enter trades will underperform — combine the trend filter with structure, volatility (ATR), and a defined invalidation level.
